Received a message from a campaign?

Why you may have received it, how to stop it and how to exercise your rights.

If you received an SMS, call, email or Telegram message from a political campaign through Sauti, this page explains what it means and what you can do.

Who sent it?#

The campaign named in the message sent it. Sauti is the technology the campaign uses. The campaign decides who to contact and what to say, and is responsible for having a lawful reason to contact you.

Stop the messages#

Reply STOP, ACHA or SITAKI to the message. You will receive no further messages from that campaign on that channel, and the change takes effect immediately. Nobody at the campaign can override it.

For a call, tell the caller you do not want to be contacted again.

Report a message#

If a message was offensive, threatening, or you never agreed to receive it, report it on the complaint page using the message reference. Do not include your phone number or email in the report. A complaint stops messages to you from every campaign on Sauti.

Your rights#

Under the Data Protection Act, 2019 you can ask:

  • what personal data is held about you and where it came from;
  • for incorrect data to be corrected;
  • for your data to be deleted;
  • to object to your data being used for political messaging.

Contact the campaign directly, or write to Sauti's privacy contact listed in the privacy notice. We will verify your identity and respond within the legal time limits. You also have the right to complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC).

How your number is protected#

Campaign staff cannot see your full phone number. It is encrypted and only unlocked by the sending system at the moment a message is sent. See How Sauti protects data.
