Getting started

Roles and what they can do

The built-in roles, geographic scope and recipient caps, explained in plain language.

Access in Sauti has three parts: a role (what you can do), a scope (which campaign and which area) and, for senders, a recipient cap (how large a send you can release without approval).

Built-in roles#

Role Typical person Main abilities
Owner The candidate or campaign principal Everything in the organisation, including team, roles, wallet and settings
Campaign manager Head of campaign Audiences, sends, journeys, approvals, reports and field management
Communications officer Comms team Compose and submit messages, work the inbox
Regional coordinator County, constituency or ward lead Activity and results for their area, manage field users there
Finance officer Treasurer or accountant Wallet, payments, donations, payouts, invoices and spending
Volunteer Canvasser or caller Walk lists, call lists, tasks and surveys, mainly in the field app
Polling agent Agent at a polling station Check-in, incidents and results for one station
Read-only analyst Strategist or observer Dashboards and reports only

Built-in roles cannot be edited. Owners can create custom roles with any combination of permissions they themselves hold. See Roles and permissions.

Scope#

Every role assignment has a scope: the whole campaign, or a set of counties, constituencies, wards or polling stations. Lists, counts, audiences and reports only include people inside that scope. A coordinator for one ward cannot see or message another ward.

Recipient caps#

Roles that can send carry a maximum number of recipients per send. A send above that number needs approval from someone with approval permission, even if your organisation's approval policy would otherwise let it through.

What no campaign role can do#

No role in a campaign organisation can reveal or export supporters' raw phone numbers, email addresses or ID numbers. That is deliberate, and it protects both the supporters and your campaign. Where the law requires a disclosure, Sauti's data officers handle it through an audited process.

Staff contact details#

The masking rule protects supporters: the people your campaign reaches. Your own team's email addresses, usernames and phone numbers are shown to colleagues in the same organisation, for example on the users list or as the payer of a wallet top-up.
