Building audiences
Combine geography, tags, fields, consent and engagement into live, reusable audiences.
An audience is a saved set of rules that decides who receives a send, a journey or a walk list. Audiences are live: the count is recalculated every time you use them, so people who opted out since you saved it are always left out.
Open Messaging › Audiences and choose a campaign tab.
Building an audience#
- Choose New audience and give it a clear name, for example "Kiambu youth, replied in last 30 days".
- Decide whether people must match All filters or Any filter.
- Add filters:
| Filter | Examples |
|---|---|
| Geographic area | A county, constituency, ward or polling station within your scope |
| Tag | Has the tag "Volunteer interest" |
| Survey and response | Answered, did not answer or completed a survey |
| Import batch | People from one specific list |
| Custom field and value | Meeting day is Saturday |
| Number status | Exclude numbers found inactive |
| Reachable on | SMS, WhatsApp, email or voice |
| Recent activity | Delivered, replied or opted out within a number of days |
- For complex logic, open Advanced AND/OR rule tree and nest groups, for example (Ward A OR Ward B) AND tag "Youth".
- Check the live count, then save.
Rules that always apply#
- Counts and members never go beyond your assigned geographic scope.
- People who opted out, are suppressed, or are not reachable on the chosen channel are removed when the send is prepared.
- Counts are shown privacy-banded, so very small groups appear as a range.
Tips#
- Name audiences by who and why, not by date.
- Build a test audience of your own team to try new message types before a big send.
- Use Recent activity: replied to follow up with engaged people, and exclude opted out recipients from appeals.
- See Gender and age filters for targeted programmes such as bursaries.
